Linda Engelbrecht - 2007

I joined the bad bunch of walkers (Sonia, Charlene and co) in October 2004 with the idea of "Walk to get fit". I always thought that the people who take part in races and walk/run for hours on end had a mental problem or did not know how to drive a car...BUT...within a month the BUG had bitten and I was keen to do my first race. Joined uMhalthuze club thinking that at least in this club, I would not be the craziest person, some of the girls do 2 races in 1 weekend.

My first race was the monster 21km in Eshowe and thought to myself no other race could be as bad and so I entered for more and more. I have since experienced tougher routes

I am extremely fortunate that I have my own fan club (being my husband) and he is there to motivate, second, chauffer and cheer me on in 95% of the races that I do. The walkers in the uMhalthuze club are a good bunch and there is always someone to travel with and walk with.

This is the 3rd year that I am participating in the 500km challenge. My first year achieving bronze medal with 546km, 2nd year silver with 930 km and I will try and go for gold this year (needing 1204km)

Special achievement, thus far has to be walking the Mont Aux Sources and completing it with 29 seconds to spare.

Biggest disappointment, bailing on the 100 miler at 98 km due to blisters and having left my right knee skin on the tarmac at about 46km.

Goal: To walk the triple Challenge (100miler, comrades and the longest day in one year) before the age of 50. So I have a good few years in hand.

Worst Experience: Travelling over 300km to do a race the following morning and realizing that you have not packed your takkies. That's when you realize uMhalthuze AC has angels in the midst who pack an extra pair for just in case.
