Chris van der Westhuizen - 2007

Fifty seven year old Chris writes:
I started running at school level and won several trophies.
Then in 1982 a friend of mine encouraged me to take up road running, I never looked back since then as it became my passion.

In 1983 I ran my very first Comrades marathon. In 1986 I did my best time of 8h33min.
For personal reasons I stopped running from 1987 to 1999. I started again in 2000 and in 2007 managed to complete my 10th Comrades earning a permanent green number.

My biggest achievement was in 2006, when I completed the triple Challenge. This consists of the Comrades, the longest day 12 hour track race and the Midlands 100 miler. In the 100 miler I won the master category and was also in the winning team.

Running gives me a lot of pleasure. It keeps me fit and feeling young and energetic.
I belong to The Umhlathuze Athletic Club which focuses on road running.
They have great camaradarie and are very supportive; everyone motivates each other to do that extra mile. It is a great club to belong to.

Anyone thinking of taking up road running should go ahead and do so; you will see what a great difference it makes to your body, mind and health.

Chris is a fantastic example to younger athletes and we wish him the best for the future road running.
