Gareth Sander - 2004

UMhlathuze Athletic Club Junior athlete Gareth Sander is someone that does not like to brag. He writes: "I started running at the age of 9. Got interested in running at school. Have also recently started walking, because I attended a race, which I was not old enough to run in, so I decided to walk and since then I have continued to walk as well as run."

These are some of the races I have participated in:
The Spares Shop uMhlathuze 21.1/10 km
Hillside Aluminum 10 km
IMamba 10 km
RBM 10 km
RBCT relay 8 km
Mkuze Game run 16 km

Through running I have met lots of new people and traveled to different places. The Ladies Spar Challenge was the funniest race I have participated in, because all the men have to dress up as women.

What I still want to achieve is doing a Comrades Marathon and if I complete it Successfully, then I would like to run a 100 miler.

What Gareth fails to mention is that he is top cross-country scholar at Felixton College and has achieved Northern Coastal Colours for cross-country for the past 4 years. Incredibly as a junior he was part of the uMhlathuze senior men's winning team that got the gold medal at the Mkuze 16 km run earlier this year. Even at the prize giving afterwards the organizers could not believe it and made special mention of Gareth. On top of this he was also first junior in The Spares Shop 10 km as well as the Hillside 10 km in 2004.

With the support of his parents (Brad and Isabelle are both uMhlathuze AC members), this 16 year old modest but talented Crocodile has a bright future.
